I close my eyes and make a choice,

Listening closely for a steadying voice.

For tears and anger are not my friends,

But they bring a clarity when the quiet descends.

We look for comfort, we search around,

But sometimes presence cannot be found.

In the empty spaces where shadows fall,

We lean on memories to bridge the wall.

Distance strikes like a baseball hit,

Sailing over the fence while the bleachers sit.

One side jumps and the other sighs,

Watching the disconnect in the evening skies.

They say a heart can be too much to hold,

When it simply asks not to be left in the cold.

What is it to seek honesty and grace?

Just common courtesy and a familiar face.

When two become one, what does it mean,

If time is fleeting and effort unseen?

I look to the cross and the words in red,

“Do unto others,” just as He said.

A quiet reminder of where to stand,

Seeking peace, and an open hand.
